Vitamins, in the form of industrial feed additives presently available on the European market, continue to be indispensable for the production of premixes and compound feed. As important micro-ingredients for all types of feed and food they constitute an essential element of wholesome nutrition and, thus, contribute to the health of animals and consumers. It is therefore not surprising that these products are potential items for control and inspection throughout the food chain. Consequently, the choice of the right analytical method becomes a central issue. Comprehensive collections of analytical methods for vitamins, suitable for the use in the feed industry, have been scarce but the awareness of quality issues has been steadily growing. Hence, the FEFANA Working Party Vitamins decided to put together a publication giving an overview of ‘tried and tested’ analytical methods, currently used in the industry. |

Probiotics are live microbial feed supplements which beneficially affect the host by improving its intestinal microbial balance (Fuller, 1992). Correspondingly, in feed regulation, probiotics are included in the group of feed additives for stabilising the microbial communities of the digestive tract in monogastric animals and ruminants. They are also known as digestive bioregulators or direct-fed microbials (DFMs). In a narrower sense, the term probiotics is confined to products which consist of one, or a few, well-defined strains of microorganisms (WHO, 1994). FEFANA is pleased to support this booklet on probiotics which helps to have a better understanding on probiotic mechanisms and EU situation. |

Protein requirements and supply for a competitive European pig production in 2010 |

With about 200 million pigs produced per year, and with a forecasted increase by 40 to 50% with the EU enlargement, pig production represents a significant economic factor in the European Union's agricultural sector. Over the past decade, pig production has increased by more than 8% and about 5 – 7% of pork is exported. Globally, however, the EU faces strong competition mainly from North and South America. The production conditions in the EU are increasingly challenging. Stringent rules on animal welfare, growing environmental constraints and an alerted public in terms of food safety pose practical difficulties and economic burden on all stakeholders in this sector. |
