In the frame of the feed additives applications under Regulation (EC) No 1831/2003, the European Commission published a new Regulation (EC) No 885/2009 amending Regulation (EC) No 378/2005 as regards reference samples, fees and the laboratories listed in Annex II in the Official Journal of the EU issued on 26 September 2009. FEFANA welcomes this publication which, among others, will allow many applicants for authorizations of feed additives to put forward grouped applications and benefit from important economic advantages, as both the number of samples to submit and the fees to be paid to the Community Reference Laboratory (CRL) will be significantly reduced from now on. |

FEFANA launches a consortium on urea and its derivatives - 2009-09-30 |

FEFANA has launched a new consortium: UREAC EEIG. This consortium will indeed be focusing on urea and its derivatives classified in the nutritional additives category determined in Annex I of the 1831/2003 legislation. In fact, co-ordinated efforts of those producing or using urea and its derivatives are urgently needed in order to secure their authorisation on the EU market and also maintain an appropriate diversity of sources. Towards their own clients who are closely keeping an eye on the re-authorisation process, companies involved in the UREAC European Economic Interest Grouping position themselves as responsible and reliable partners. |

ISO 30024:2009, a standard method for determining phytase activity now published - 2009-09-29 |

In 2008, Members of the FEFANA Task Force on Phytase together with Gisèle Gizzi and Christophe von Holst of the European Commission’s Community Reference Laboratory (CRL) proactively cooperated in an interlaboratory study on the determination of phytase activity in feed which was eventually issued in the Journal of AOAC International (Vol. 91, No. 2, 2008). Later on, this team of experts went on with successful participation in CEN and ISO activities for the development of an international standard on the determination of phytase activity in animal feeding stuffs. The standard, known as ISO 30024:2009, has reached the publication stage this summer. |

Dr. Frank Chmitelin (Adisseo) recently took over the Presidency of FEFANA, the EU Feed Additives and Premixtures Association. The Board of FEFANA unanimously elected him as the successor of Dr. Hadden Graham (AB Vista), who will continue his work as a Member of the FEFANA Board. Dr. Dieter Greissinger (Evonik Degussa) was elected as Vice-President and Dr. Franz-Joseph Schöner’s (BASF) Treasurer mandate has been renewed. |

On 1 September 2009, the new Regulation (EC) 767/2009 on the use and placing on the market of feed was published in the Official Journal of the European Union. After a long time without a legal home, products containing high feed additive concentrations (also known as ‘Nutritional Supplements’) are now ruled under this new Regulation and will be classified as “Dietetic Complementary Feed”. A transition period of one year is foreseen to take care of a Community authorisation for those products already on the market. FEFANA is coordinating these procedures on behalf of its members. |

FEFANA reached some important goals and had some significant achievements in 2008-09. On the occasion of the FEFANA General Assembly held in Brussels on 10 June 2009, an informative session was organized for members and guests. FEFANA welcomed Mr. Nan-Dirk Mulder from the Rabobank’s Food and Agribusiness Research and Advisory Department, who made an interesting and impressive presentation to a large audience. Most FEFANA Members as well as representatives of the EC and of fellow associations attended the morning event. In the afternoon seesion, a vote was organized for the election of the new FEFANA Board. |

On 13 May 2009, the European Commission published a new regulation in the Official Journal, opening a new functional group under Regulation (EC) 1831/2003 for feed additives acting on the reduction of the contamination of feed by mycotoxins. This first amendment to the new Feed Additive Regulation, put in place in 2003, is not only a milestone regarding innovation by the European Union for the feed additive business, but also an important step forward in the integrated fight against mycotoxin contamination of feed. |

One consortium to support the industry in obtaining EU authorisation for emulsifiers existing under the Feed Additives Regulation 1831/2003 has been established by the European Feed Additives and Premixtures Association (FEFANA). This consortium is indeed focusing on emulsifiers classified in the technological additives category determined in Annex I of the 1831/2003 legislation and has been named EMULAC. |

FEFANA has reached agreements with Sindirações (Brazil) and AFIA (USA) which seal a policy of strong cooperation with each. These organizations will provide support and share knowledge about their respective feed safety schemes in order to reduce trade barriers and still meet the necessary regulatory requirements of each territory. This is an important step for the feed sector and supports the work towards increased safety assurance of the feed chain done by the three organizations at international level. |

FEFANA has developed a user-friendly tool in order to support feed business operators and authorities in classifying feed products and mixtures, a permanent system for EU operators and importers in order to identify regulatory obligations. Based on very simple questions, the web tool, called ID-feed, allows any single component or feed mixture to be allocated the proper regulatory classification status. Such a tool will prove helpful not only for operators to ensure compliance of their products with regulatory frameworks but hopefully also for the authorities to ensure a consistent regulatory management of such products on the market. |

Harmonized analytical method for control of all phytase sources currently authorized in EU - 2008-12-12 |

Under the FEFANA umbrella, phytase experts in collaboration with the Community Reference Laboratory for feed additives, operated by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre in Geel, Belgium (CRL) have worked on the establishment of a common analytical method for all phytase sources for several years. The harmonized method which has been developed is a tool to quantify phytase products in feed samples. |
